I’ve watched enough Bear Grylls to know you don’t want to fall into a “crevasse” when exploring a glacier. Funny I don’t remember him mentioning “moulin’s” like my guide did so often. A moulin is simply a hole in the glacier. It resembles a well-shaft that water enters into from the surface of the ice. Moulins were everywhere on Matanuska Glacier. They gave you a window to peer into the thousands of feet of glassy ice. teal cooler in front of truck parked on sandy beach

Amazing 26-Mile Long Ice Sheet

This amazing 26-mile long ice sheet, located a couple of hours northeast of Anchorage, Alaska, is one of the few major glaciers in the world that can be explored by the public. For an outdoor excursion that goes deep out on the glacier, we’re thankful to have a guide that's been here before. Rob was cool and calm with a huge red beard, kind eyes, and a face that had seen its share of arctic winds. He’s the kind of guy you want calling the shots on an adventure like this. 26 mile long ice sheet northeast of Anchorage, AK It was a sunny day and as we carefully traversed the glacier, tethered to our fearless guide, it was impossible not to be struck by the beauty of something so simple as ice. This pure glacial ice was so blue you could lose yourself, looking into it like one does a campfire. Instead of watching oranges and yellows dance around, your eyes are drawn deeper into this otherworldly scene. And instead of watching the smoke rise, you can watch the teal-colored glacial runoff, meandering through the glacier, out the bottom, and off to some amazing alpine lake. The kind of lake I’d dream of building a cabin on. How could something as simple as ice be so amazing? man walking on glacier

Looking Out Over A Teal-Colored Alpine Lake

“Blue is the color of pure glacier ice”
Rob announced as he saw me staring. “All the air bubbles have been squeezed out by the intense heaviness of the ice.” “Pure ice is so dense, that like a sapphire, it reflects the blue hues of the light spectrum, and only the most perfect blue reaches your eyes.” I listened, and wondered, what doesn’t this guy do? He’s like a poet, scientist, adventurer wrapped into an Irishman's body. He continued on and explained that as the ice melts, the water running off the glacier absorbs more yellow light. While the hydrogen bonds, (H20=water of course) this causes a green hue to emerge. The purest blue mixes with the deepest green, and the result is teal. I don’t know how else to describe it except to say this teal color is calming. To look out over a teal-colored alpine lake, for me, makes me breathe deep and slow. It settles me down and calms me at my core. man standing at opening of glacier cave So I never do anything halfway! If I'm going on a glacier excursion I'm going to experience it 100%! Needless to say, we packed in tents and slept for a night out on the ice. It was very surreal hammering tent stakes into the ice while the brightest stars and northern lights the earth has to offer shimmered above me. I left the rain fly off that night. It made it a bit colder but the views laying on my back were incredible. I probably fell asleep around 4 am, just because I didn't want to miss anything. teal cooler inspiration

Teal Cooler Inspiration From Glacier Blue

While the sky above was impressive, the glacier below was equally incredible that night. Funny, when you stop moving and are just listening, you would think the glacier is alive. It creaks and groans like an old man trying to get out of bed. In my half-asleep state, I wondered how far this glacier would travel while I was out? Some glaciers have moved as much as 50 meters in a day, but this one usually traveled just a few centimeters. I guess I'll still be walking back to the truck in the morning. One thing is for sure, I'll never forget this glacier excursion! This adventure was cold but rewarding. And I have to tell you, anytime I see glacier blues and alpine teals since this experience it takes me back to Matanuska. I can still hear Rob’s voice echo in my mind,
“It’s the most pristine thing you’ll ever see!”
